How Can Carotid Occlusive Disease Be Treated?

Hello Doctor I have been told by the surgeons at the Veterans Hospital that I have a fully occluded right carotid artery. the other is about 40%.. they intend to do some surgery on the left side since the right is completely occluded. Is there anything they can do to correct the right carotid artery as well as the left. I have too much to live for without having any complications ?

Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

I udertsnad that you wish to fix the other side too, but this is not reasonable. First, boths sides at same times should never be done due to risk of brain ischemia during the procedure. Second, clear indication for endarterectomy is only if stenosis is higher than 70% in asymptomatic and higher than 50% in patients with one or more transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) in the preceding 6 months.
So the other side should not cause any symptoms and should not be repaired. However, other alterative for right side treatment would be interventional radiologic stenting but this is available only in high specialized centres so you should see if it is possible in your place...
