How Can Chest Congestion And Fluid In Ears Be Treated?

I have been sick for 3 days with major chest congestion which hasn t cleared. Now I have fluid on my right ear. It feels like my right ear is under water...a bit of hearing loss. My left ear is clear. I ve been using Nyquil and Alka Seltzer Plus, severe cold and flu but it doesn t seem to be getting better. Should I go get some antibiotics?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of chest congestion and fluid in ears which seems to be due to respiratory infection leading to eustachian tube dysfunction.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to

- Apply hot dry compresses to external ear and keep it dry.

- You should ake ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and discomfort.

- Avoid picking ear with any sharp object.

- Avoid excessive use of mobile from that side.

If symptoms keeps on persisting you should consult ENT specialist for proper examination. Doctor will examine you ear with otoscope. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin at least for a week along with decongestants

Hope your concern has been resolved.
