How Can Chlamydia Be Treated?

I was just diagnosed with chlamydia. The reason why I went to the doctor is because I had cramps and felt like if I was going to get my period but I didn t get it. It’s been almost two weeks that I was supposed to get my period. I told the doctor about my cramps and he examine me with tact. He noticed that I had some pain in my left side. He send me to get a sonogram and saw that I could have PCOS , but he also told me that he wasnt dignosing me with that because I needed to have other symptoms that I don t have. He did many tests and told me that if anything he would called me. He called me with the news that I had chlamydia. I never had any symptoms, only mild pain sometimes in my ovaries, and I had this pain I want to say from 5 months ago, but I didn t believe it could be serious. I am not sure if I got it 5 months ago or a year ago from who I believe I got it. I am scared that Because I waited to get diagnoised in the future I will be infertile. The doctor didn t said anything from the sonogram the only thing he said was about the posibility of having PCOS. I want to know if the time I waited to get diagnoised is a long time to cause infertility

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There is no particular time span within which you are likely to experience complications due to chlamydia. It is possible to carry the bacteria for several years without suffering any long-term effects.

Every patient is different and it is difficult to predict whether an existing infection has caused any complications if you have not noticed any chlamydia symptoms.

The longer the STI remains untreated, the higher the risk of complications and permanent damage such as infertility. Treatment for it is azithromycin drug once daily or doxycycline twice daily for 7 days with sexual abstinence.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka
