How Can Cholesterol Levels Be Kept Under Control?

I am 72 years old and my doctor tell me to take 2 red yeast tablets in the am and two and night. My cholesterol is 209. I was reading about the side affects and warnings. Is is better to be on Meds. The Red Yeast Rice has not helped decrease my cholesterol and I have taken it for 5 years.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Your cholesterol level of 209mg/dl is slightly higher than normal. It is desirable to be below 180mg/dl.
You can bring down cholesterol level by means of diet and exercise. You may not need medication at this stage.
Kindly go for brisk walk regularly in a day for about 40 minutes. Consume diet having moderate carbohydrates, low fats and high in protein along with good quality of dietary fibre.
Abstain from smoking and alcohol if you are habituated to.
Check your cholesterol level every 6 months to keep a watch on its control and improvement.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
