How Can Chronic COPD Be Treated?

I recently had a episode of what I believe to be exacerbation of COPD. I have had COPD for about four years and have had 2 prior episodes of exacerbations. In both cases the doctor treating me prescribed levaquin which quickly took care of the problem. In my latest episode the doctor gave me a prescription for prednisone in addition to azithromycin for 1 5 day regimen. While I had had modest improvement it was no comparison to the more positive effects when taking levaquin. What is you opinion?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

For exacerbations of COPD we can use:

1. Short acting beta agonist (salbutamol)
2. Short acting muscrinic antagonist (ipratropium)
3. Antibiotics for infective cause of exacerbation
4. Sterioids as last resort

If you were feeling more better with Leviquin, you can switch Leviquin for Azithromycin along with Prednisolone.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammad Adnan Iqbal
