How Can Chronic Burping Be Treated?

hi - I am troubled, and my husband is troubled, by my burping when I am lying down. I take a half teaspoon of a pro-biotic, Superdophilus, before I go to bed, but it is not totally effective. I am a 69 year old female. Sometimes I feel a rumbling in my stomach, and burping seems to relieve it, but it doesn t go away. I eat a low carb diet, but with two rykrisps at lunch and at dinner. I also eat 1-3 apples a day. Could this be a fodmap problem? Thank you

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

This type of swallowing difficulty may indicate a specific condition called hiatal hernia, should be considered and it means that the stomach is protruding through diaphragm muscle.

It may cause breathing difficulties, nausea, swallowing difficulties and irritation of the stomach. It will also be aggravated by certain food or medications, stress, and smoking. You need to avoid fried food, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol, and spicy food.

You should eat more milk products, vegetables, and boiled food. Also, certain antiacid medications may be required, and as of the last option, it is possible to perform surgical repair of hernia especially if there are progressive respiratory discomfort and dyspepsia. To diagnose it, you should do gastroscopy and if it is negative as in your case, then you should do contrast x-rays of the stomach.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
 Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
