How Can Chronic Constipation Be Treated?

I eat healthy, lots of greens, organic vegetables, fruit , nuts, chicken, fish, small amounts of red meat. I use ground flax seed, aloe vera juice, vitamins and supplements. I exercise quite regulary and drink plenty of water, 1-2 cups of coffee and 1/2 of a glass of juice a day. My problem is constipation. What am I doing wrong?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Constipation can occur due to a number of causes like the sudden change in dietary habits, excess intake of dairy, taking a low fiber diet, lack of physical activity, stress, hypothyroidism, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, eating disorders etcetera.

I would suggest you consult an Emergency room or a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated, and he can advise you investigations like Colonoscopy, Barium Swallow, ultrasound etcetera to rule out the exact cause of the problem and treat you accordingly.

You can be advised to take high fiber diet, do the moderate workout, take walk after meals, drink plenty of water, take laxatives and stool softeners like Docusate, fiber supplements like Psyllium. You should eat every 2 hours.

Go to the toilet at the same time every morning and try to evacuate your bowels as it can help in developing the habit of regular bowels. You can be advised prescription drugs like Lubiprostone and Linaclotide.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
