How Can Chronic Constipation In An Infant Be Treated?
My grand-daughter 22mths have very severe constipation. She will cry when she tries to go to the bathroom. When she does go the stools are very hard and very large in size. Her last movement was 4 days ago. I told my daughter to give her juice, meralax and a stool softner. Then give her a warm bath in about and hr. She did and my grand-daughter passed a stool a little smaller than a golf ball size and VERY hard. I am getting very concerned with this. My daughter had an appt w/ her ped Dr and they said to do as I had told her. This has been going on way too long . your suggestion?
There are a number of different causes of constipation in children with dietary factors being most common. Dietary factors would take a look at fiber and fluid intake. In general, she should have fruits, vegetables, oats and other forms of fiber.
The fruit or vegetables (such as carrot sticks) should replace any other snacks.
If she is currently using enough fiber and fluid and still having problems then she should be assessed for other causes such as : (1) structural issues of the colon--imaging of the colon would be needed (2)thyroid disease (3)high calcium (4)celiac disease (5)low potassium (6)conditions of the spinal cord...imaging of the spine would be required
I hope this helps
