How Can Chronic Cough And Nose Congestion Be Treated?

I have had a horrible cough for 14 days now, have taken Mucinex DM, cough drops etc... with little to no relief. My cough is minimally productive with clear to green mucus. Sometimes the cough is so bad that I can't catch my breath and even can gag. I also frequently get a headache with it and my sinus are congested...my nose is not stuffed or runny...should I continue to treat at home or seek medical care?

Hi,

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from upper respiratory tract infection, that seems to have progressed to Bronchitis. As of now you can start with supportive treatment to relieve the symptoms like:

- Gargle with a warm saline solution that is by mixing 1 teaspoon salt in a glass of water and warm it to make a lukewarm solution.
- Take a combination of decongestant like Phenylephrine, Mucolytic like Ambroxol and anti allergic levocetrizine and another combination of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen.
- Take cough expectorant containing Gueifenesin and cough suppressant containing Dextromethorphan.
- Chew a Vitamin C pellet daily.
- Do steam inhalations.
- Avoid spicy and chilled foods.
- Sip on warm water throughout the day.
- Do warm compresses over chest.

Hopefully the symptoms will resolve within a week and if it worsen consult a General Physician and get evaluated.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
