How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I have asthma and have had a chronic cough for about a year. It s not a usual cough at the top of the throat, but waaay down in my throat. I ll be fine and all of a sudden my throat on one side or the other goes dry and I can t stop coughing. It s so powerful that my eyes get red, my eyes water, and occasionally I feel as if I m going to vomit. My doctor just says to change up my allergy OTC meds. My employer is starting to question my employability. Something is not right but I can t get anyone to take me seriously. I ve tried homeopathic asthma no cough meds, cough drops, honey, etc. I drink water non-stop. Something is not right and I don t know where to turn.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
I understand your concern
Chronic cough could be due to chronic bronchitis, COPD, allergy, GERD, tuberculosis.
I would suggest to consult pulmonary medicine specialist and undergo examination, routine blood tests, pulmonary function test, sputum test to confirm the cause.
Specific treatment depend on cause
Meanwhile you can take following advises:
-Take Cough syrup containing guaifenesin and dextromethorphan (Q tussin CF): 10 ml three times a day
-Drink plenty of lukewarm water
-Steam inhalation 3-4 times a day
-Strepsil throat lozenges (neem and honey flavor):take every 3 hourly
-Avoid cold beverages and exposure to pollutants
- Avoid smoking
Hope this may help you
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
