How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

Hi, I just survived the flu! I m at the end of day 6. My cough is really bugging me. I can t rest. Everytime I lay down I have post nasal drip and then a really bad coughing fit. When I finally do get to rest by lungs are so irritated it feels like bronchitiis. Can I take something over the counter?

Hello,

As per your query you have symptoms of a chronic cough which is due to upper respiratory tract infection leading to bronchitis. I would suggest you to

- Do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day.
- Avoid use of sharp and spicy food substances.
- Avoid cold carbonated beverages and take cough expectorants.

Your symptoms will resolve in 1 week. If symptoms keeps on persisting you should consult ENT specialist once and take proper treatment. You should get X-ray chest done along with pulmonary function tests. Doctor may prescribe Amoxicillin/Azithromycin for at least for 5 days along with anti-inflammatory medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
