Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am an 89 ear old femail with a sleep problem...not going to sleep but staying a sleep and some times being awake at 2 a.m. and nit able to go back to go back to sleep and being awake for 2-3 hours. I know about having a cool, dark room, going to bed at the same time, and the usual sleep remedies. My internist has given me a prescription for Gabapentin 100 mg but have not found it very helpful . My late husband was on Ativan? for most of a year and after he died I had a few pills left and took them. I had the best sleep I have had in 10 years. When I asked my doctor for a prescription she refused. My question is what is so wrong for the medication for me and not for my husband? I am interested in quality of life and not quantity. Thoughts please. gabapentin 100 mg
Based on the history you have shared, you can discuss the sleep issues with a psychiatrist and after ruling out any contraindications he can prescribe you Ativan or any other sleep medicine as the issue of insomnia is quite serious and may trigger chronic fatigue and other stress-related disorders.
Gabapentin may not suffice your needs but starting sleep medicines should better be by a psychiatrist. Avoid self-medications meanwhile.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin
