How Can Chronic Nerve Pain In The Arms And Legs Be Treated?

Hello, I have chronic widespread nerve pain. I thought for years that I had Fibromyalgia, but the pain now goes beyond just those typical tender points. I had cervical spine surgery last February and have a failed lower lumbar spinal fusion surgery almost 4 years ago. My pain management doctor thinks I have trapped nerves in the lower spine, but I m concerned about the nerve pain/muscle pain in arms & legs. It seems like my nerves are all on heightened alert. Or nerves are all misfiring... constant fire drill. I ve tried Gabepentin, Lyrica & Cymbalta - with no help. Thank you for your insight. Laura.

Hello,

As per your history, you were having chronic pain in arms and legs. There was cervical spine surgery. So, the probable reason could be compression of nerve supplying to arm and leg.

This can be confirmed and other causes can be excluded by the following investigations:
1. Nerve conduction tests
2. X-ray arms and legs
3. Blood glucose levels
4. Serum calcium

Coming to treatment part, you can follow the below:
1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug
2. Extension and flexion exercises
3. Pain killer spray can be used
4. Muscle relaxants can be used for 1 week
5. Vitamin tablets

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vamsi Krishna Chittimoju
