How Can Constipation After A Back Surgery Be Treated?

yes i am currently now able to go to the bathroom now for too many days now. i used to take dulcolax and it helped me. i now have had scoliosis back operation and it was a success. now my problem is i can not go to the bathroom for over a week. I know the pain pills are a lot stronger and will request to go back to level one prescription in the mean time i tried a magnesium drink all i have received is my tummy grumbled. I am very concerned what should i try? Also i have always taken very good of my body all my life i worked out, played basket ball, tennis lessons, soft ball danced etc. Never ever had a fat tummy. Now i have two tummies on the left and on the right. I have been released from pt last work . I have been told that the more walking the better. Ever day i have been walking with walker. Two questions why can i not go the bathroom and the will my tummy go away.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Constipation can occur due to a number of causes like sudden change in dietary habits, excess intake of dairy, taking a low fibre diet, lack of physical activity, stress, hypothyroidism, diabetes, irritable bowl syndrome, eating disorders etc. However your problem seems to be lack of physical activity and can also be a side effect of medicines. I would suggest you to consult an Emergency room or a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated and he can advise you investigations like Colonoscopy, Barium Swallow, ultrasound etc to rule out the exact cause of the problem and treat you accordingly. You can be advised to take high fibre diet, do moderate workout, take walk after meals, drink plenty of water, take laxatives and stool softeners like Docusate, fibre supplements like Psyllium. You should eat every after 2 hours. Go to toilet on the same time every morning and try to evacuate your bowels as it can help in developing habit of regular bowels..You can be advised prescription drugs like Lubiprostone and Lincolotide.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
