How Can Constipation Along With Swollen Ankles Be Treated?

My husband is recovering from 3 broken ribs, a small pneumothorax and hemo thorax of the lung near where the ribs were broken. He is 73 with COPD and atrial fib. Besides his regular medications, he was taking pain meds in the hospital for 3 days, oxicodone 3-4 times per day, then changed to hydromorphone 2-4mg 3 times per day, then after returning home, 3 pills one day, one pill the next, and none today. He is severely constipated, has not had a bowel movement for 7 days. Now his ankles are swollen. He has been taking stool softener, and has tried mirilax, and a fleet enema as well as psyillium husk and prune juice. He has also been drinking fluids. He has not had constipation in the past. He is desperate. What should he do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You just had very good treatment for constipation so you better wait for a while or a day for treatment to give its effects.

If he still doesn't have a bowel movement and maybe vomiting and abdominal pain start he should visit a surgeon and do also an ultrasound.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Olgeta Xhufka , General & Family Physician
