How Can Constipation And Fecal Incontinence Be Treated?

I have had colonoscopies until age 75 and have never had any polyps. I am now 79 and have had increasing bowel problems. (had been told many years ago that it was IBS). I am now having bouts of fecal incontinence . At times I am constipated for 2 or 3 days and then have as many as 8 bowel movements in a day. They range from hard to soft to diarrhea. I am on several medications which list constipation as a possible side effect including Diltiazem and xarelto. Should I be concerned that it is more than age or IBS or medication. It is making me uncomfortable about traveling, etc.

Hi,

The constipation is not related to your routine drugs. As of now you can include more fiber rich foods in your diet. You can also take laxatives like lactulose for smooth bowel movements. If symptoms persist better to consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
