Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi - My 1 and a half year old daughter has struggled with constipation for months now. Our pediatrician told us that it s normal for toddlers to be constipated, but this doesn t seem normal. It is painful, and interrupts her play several times/day. She struggles to get just a small amount of poop out and often it is sticky and partially stuck. We ve recently (10 days ago) eliminated dairy from her diet in the hopes that would clear it, but it has persisted (prune juice was not effective). She eats vegetables every day, and usually has two eggs/day. Snacks are usually fruit (we ve limited bananas since we learned they can contribute to constipation) or organic Peanut Butter crackers. About 6 weeks ago, she also developed an eczema like rash on her chest and back which seems to be getting worse and is now behind both knees. I welcome any advice! Thank you!
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. * Constipation in toddelars is due to- -fussiness while eating... thus not eating vegetables,fruits&salads.. thus less of fibers in diet (a kidof 1.5 yrs needs about 5 gm. fibers daily. -more of dairy products in diet. -drinking less water. Child must always be given filtered ,fresh &potable eater. Contaminated water can imbibe infection in bowels. -wrong toilet habits. - avoidence in passing stools ....this causes absorbtion of water from pstools... making it dry&hard. I observe that you have already applied mostof the habits outofthese.. those which are left out can be started now. *Infection pofintestinal tract (viral... bacterial. amebic or worm infestation... can cause constipation . Microscopic testing of stools would clear the causative factor....consult her doctor for specific treatment. Thanks.
