How Can Constipation In An Elderly Woman Be Treated?

Hello my name is Beckie and i am a non certified/ medically trained caregiver. I have a 95 yr old lady whom i take care of. Who recently was in the hospital for an upper GI Bleed. The hospital wanted to do a procedure that consisted of putting her to sleep to put a camera down her throat, but the family of hers (which are er doctor, and a surgeon ) told her that its too risky for her, so she refused the procedure, and was released. She was having dark bloody like bowl movements prior to hospital visit now aftering been home for over a week now, she has not had a single bowl movement since she was in the hospital. Is that something to b concerned about? Or should i just give her some stool softener to regulate the irregularity?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not of that much worry because they must have given antiperistaltic agents during the course of treatment in hospital, continue stool softners and fibrous diet. P.C enema is safe for her and can be used as the last remedy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
