How Can Contact Dermatitis Be Treated?

Hello Im in need of a Steroid free product to heal my contact dermatitis on the eyelids. I started with a Neosporin cream on the eyelid then a Cortaid cream after that. It started on the eyelid over a year ago, I feel it may have been from a new hair color product my hairdresser switched to and or from switching to sulfate free shampoos? The dermatitis then started on the forehead, around and in the ears and now starting on the neck. The dermatologist prescribed a Desonide cream 0.05%. I have recently done a patch test with an allergy doctor, I’m allergic to nickel sulfate and gold sodium thiosufate. He prescribed me with a Hydrocortisone 1% CeraVe cream for affected areas. I have always known about the nickel and do stay away from that. I have not been wearing any make up for some time and now wash my face with CeraVe hydrating cleanser. I am worried about the use of steroids on the eyelid, I understand it can thin the skin. I have had enough with steroids over the last year, first a steroid shot in the back for my chronic pain then oral steroids from a hematoma/bells palsy from dentist work and a paste for the several canker sore’s in the mouth. I have always been very sensitive to strong chemicals and fragrance smells although this has become much worse and gives me instant headache’s. I was diagnosed with basilar migraines over five years ago and get severe vertigo symptoms, not that that has anything to do with it. I’m very worried and depressed that this is never going to to end, I’m 56 years old and would love to once again at least feel I can safely color my hair and wear make up again. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciate! Thank you Laeslie

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If you have an allergic reaction then antiallergics and steroids are the once that can help in reducing the allergy symptom. Applying steroid ointment can help in improvement of the allergy symptoms and if you apply it safely over the affected skin then it will not cause any serious side effects. Also you can apply Caladryl lotion and do cool compresses over the skin. Other precautions that you need to keep is that you should use allergy free or hypoallergenic cosmetics and hair color. Also if the symptoms are recurring it is better to consult an Allergist or an Immunologist and get evaluated and discuss about Immunotherapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
