How Can Cough And Chest Congestion Be Treated?

Had chronic ticklish cough for weeks now from chest cold, tried all types of stuff, inclduing
musinex which helps some. ER just gave me Benzonatate gel pills for cought,3 times daily, i've
taken up to 5 times daily, don't work. My ribs are so sore. Please help.
