How Can Cough And Post Nasal Drip Be Treated?

Good Morning Dr I had a very bad sinus attack and started coughing from the post nasal drip. I used a cough syrup and the cough subsided but the nasal drip caused the coughing again. So I used Sinupret Forte for the sinusitis. My blocked nose is completely cleared now. However, I still have the urge to clear my throat often. I have Dazit, should I try that once a day? Also, I stopped with the Sinupret now too. I feel quite fine just that urge to clear throat. Should I continue with the Sinupret and Dazit until it clears completely? Regards ,Hayley

As per your history is concerned please take levocetirizine (Xyzal) and guaifenesin (Mucinex) to control it.Use saline nasal sprays or irrigation, like a neti pot, to flush mucus.Turn on a vaporizer or humidifier to increase the moisture in the air.

Dentist Dr. Harry Maheshwari's  Response
Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of cough and post nasal drip .There could be many causes for your condition like cold, nasal polyp, respiratory tract infection, deviation of nasal septum and weak immune system due various diseases. You should consult doctor so that he can diagnose you properly to find out exact cause , he can review symptoms and take physical examination. If it is due to bacterial infection then doctor can prescribe antibiotics along with antihistamines and decongestants which relieves the symptoms like post nasal drip. Antihistamines are also effective if the causative factor is allergy. If mucus is thick you can also use mucolytic agent like ambroxol to make mucus thin which can be easily removed . Doctor may also recommend surgery in case of nasal polyp. Apart from this you should take steam twice a day which will give relief from congestion , also do warm saline gargles .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
