How Can Depression And PTSD Be Treated?

Hello my name is David and I do believe I have PTSD. It started quite sometime ago being a young Hispanic kid growing up in a not so nice neighborhood. Well I ended up in prison in and out for about 30 + years being involved in numerous riots, stabbings and the like. I am now 52years of age and am seriously depressed, having recurring dreams, more like nightmares of a lot of the bad things I was involved in. I ve been out of that lifestyle for approximately 15 years now and now why all of a sudden am I going thru this with the dreams very little sleep ect. I have a feeling as to why or what I will be diagnosed with and there us nothing one can do to prepare for something like that. But I am ready for whatever I need to do to get my life back in track, as I have 3 young children that love and adore their father but I seriously need help. What would you suggest I do Dr. Thank you , Respectively, DW Melendrez

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You should not lose heart. Yes, this appears that you have got depression. This is quite manageable many times.

You should see your GP, he would access you and probably will refer you to a psychiatrist who would be the best person to treat you. Treatment may include drugs but also psychotherapy. Many people do very well with treatment so you should openly speak about your disease to your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
