How Can Diarrhea While On Ciprofloxin And Metronidazole Be Treated?
My husband is taking Ciprofloxin and Metronidazole because he has a lower intestine infection. Both of these medicines side effects say they will cause diarrhea, and yes his diarrhea is worse now than before. He feels the medicine is working so would like to continue taking it. Our question is what can he eat while he has diarrhea? He also has lung problems and on oxygen, and he has lost weight and we are trying to keep as much weight on him as possible. He drinks a ensure plus in the mornings at 7:00 am then waits 2 hours to take his medicines so the calcium won t interfere with the Ciprofloxacin. Please advise what he should be eating. He started the medicines Jan 18 at dinner time.
There are no hard rules for diet while having loose motions. The recommendations is that he should take more and more fluids to avoid dehydration. ORS is the best fluid but he can take any fluid. We recommend one glass at least after every loose stool. Rest he can take anything in foods that are clean and he likes. Milk may be avoided (but not necessarily) for a few days.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
