How Can Dizziness And Imbalance In The Legs Be Treated?

Hi I had Vertigo 2years ago - from May through September. I had the usual dizziness and was hard to walk. But when this was gone - I still had trouble walking and keeping my balance. I felt like I was staggering and it has been getting worse. I have had many bad falls and it s a miracle I haven t broken something. I am now using a cane but am going to a walker cause have tipped!!! over so many times!! Been doctoring and had MRI s and other tests and they don t seem to show anything. Just had to see if you have any advice on what to do next!!! Thanks!! Diane Kohler

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Vertigo and imbalance could mostly be due to 2 reasons that are either inner ear problem or cerebellum pathology.

As you told that MRI has already been done, therefore cerebellar pathology or lesion are ruled out. For the inner ear diagnosis, consults an ENT specialist.

This type of vertigo usually is due to Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) which is a benign condition due to inner ear canal stones. These stones in the canal leading to stimulation of the vestibular nerve which leads to vertigo.

It requires exercise and Epley's maneuver which will dislodge stone from the canal and prevent vestibular stimulation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
