How Can Dizziness Be Treated?

My husband was bent over below his waist pulling trash out of another trash can from the side of the stairs two steps from the bottom. When he stood up quickly he blacked out and fell down two steps to the garage floor. He was out only 2 or 3 minutes. He hit is shoulder, hip and right forehead and it caused a small bump on his head.He crawled up the stairs and layed on the couch for a while. This happened on Feb 6th. He was fine until Feb 15th as he got out of bed very quickly and was dizzy. He has had light headedness and a light noise in his head with some pulsating. I took him to the ER on Feb 18th. They did a cat scan and a EKG and blood work. The Dr said everything was fine except his sodium was low 129. He has since brought it up to 138. The Dr told him not to drink so much water. The Dr prescribed Meclizine 25 mg. He said to take every 8 hours for dizziness for a week, but he still has to take it. His Dr referred him to a Neurologist ,but they can t see him until March 20th. He sometimes takes two aspirin s not more than 4 per day, and not every day for a headache. He just took his first Tylenol at 12:30 pm today and no other drugs except Meclizine every 8 hours. He also takes 3 different high blood pressure pills and a water pill, plus a simvastatin. Is there anything else he should do? Please let me know. My name is Sue and the patient s name is Jim. Thanks,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

After going through Jim's history, it seems he is suffering from episodes of hypotension which are making him lose consciousness or he might be having some neurological disorder but before coming to the conclusion if I would have been your treating physician, I would have done the neurological assessment of your husband, and if that's also come out to be normal, then there might be a possibility that your husband is having BPPV (benign paroxysmal postural vertigo) but as your neurologist is not available till twenty the meanwhile the treatment plan you are taking is fit for him and he should comply with it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Medhavi Agarwal
