I got sick recently and now my left ear is very sore. It sort of feels like when you drive up a hill and it needs to pop. I ve never had something like this before. Also, I ve started burping and hiccuping a lot and every time that happens there s a strong pain in my ear. What should I do?
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query.I understand your concern. It seems yiu have ear infection. While you have hiccups or belching... gas in stomoch is being expelled out through mouth. If mouth is closed.. intra aural pressure is increased... irritating eustachian tube ( that connects middle ear &decreases pressure on ear drum.)this can cause irritation of ear drum &cause pressure. This can be controlled by inhalinh hot water vapor at home in early stages. But if there is infection &inflammation along with pain...there is need for antibiotics & decongestants as per expert advise. *You can take vapor inhalation / put antibiotic ear droos./take pill of anti inflammatory pill over the counter.. But incse there is no relief in 24 hours /there is fever /ear discharge -consult an ENT specialist earliest for specific treatment. Thanks.
