How Can Ear Congestion Be Treated?

EAR WILL NOT UNCLOG!!!! February 7 in Ear, nose and throat Sunday night my left ear was itching and decided to clog up! I went Monday evening to the Urgent Clinic in town since they d been able to help me the last time. They soaked my ear 2-3 times and got all the wax out they said. When they were finished, I still couldn t hear out of my left ear!! They said to continue to flush it out for the next few days and take this antibiotic they prescribed. I ve been hearing a constant ringing in my ear and if I burp or yawn sometimes a popping noise. I read where that can mean it s got fluid built up, so I ve been afraid to flush out anymore! Do do I or don t I flush it out anymore??!!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain clogging and congestion in ear along with ringing of the ear and popping sound seems to be most probably due to fluid accumulation behind the eardrum and blocked eustachian tube..

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like x ray, MRI, otoscopy etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised a course of antibiotics, oral as well as nasal decongestants likeXylometazoline nasal sprays.
Along with it steam inhalation and chewing chewing gum can help..
In case of no improvement in 15 days surgical drainage by making a small incision through the eardrum can help..

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
