How Can Eczema In An Infant Be Treated?

My 4 month old son has bad cradle cap and eczema. I treat his cradle cap with baby oil and his eczema with petroluem jelly. My question is, how bad it is if my son ate some of the petroluem jelly and baby oil that I put on his head and body? Because every time I put baby oil and petroleum jelly on his head and body he always touch it and he put his hands on his mouth, he s been doing this since he was 2 months. I m scared now that it might have an effect on his body since it is everyday that I am putting petroluem jelly and baby oil on him and he touch it with his hands and put his hands on his mouth. Thank you so much doctors.

Hi,

Hallmarks of eczema in young infants are rash on the cheeks, elbows, chest, and diaper area; as well as a very itchy rash.

Your baby will be safe if he brings his fingers to his mouth. Neither the baby oil or petroleum jelly will harm him. Suggestions:
- It is best to use a cleanser that won't dry his skin. Bars of soap like Basis and Dove.

You will want to keep his skin moist. Place him in his infant tub with warm water (just a little bit warm) and gently move the water all over his skin. About 5-10 minutes. Take him out and pat him dry just so the drops of water are removed and skin is still moist. Then apply the jelly to seal in the moisture. You can do this 3 times a day.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
