How Can Elevated Blood Pressure Be Treated?

My blood pressure had been well controlled between 115-130 Systolic and between 70&80 Diastolic, at least that s how it had been for several months now, with the last check being about 3 weeks ago. I started taking a new medication that I REALLY do not want to give up, but my weight, blood sugar, and now blood pressure have all shot up. This morning my blood pressure was 145/86 and now it is 164/96. How urgent is it that I see my GP?
