How Can Elevated Blood Pressure Levels Be Treated?

On Wed. Jan 3rd I had a doctor s appointment to have my blood pressure checked. My be was elevated...171/80. My NP had me pick up a prescription for Hydrochlorothiazide and 40mg Lisinopril and I was to call her in 1 hour. By that time my bp was elevated to 189/90. She sent me to ER. There my bp elevated to 221/109. The doc at ER lowered my bp with clonidine and sent me home. This morning I took my prescribed dose of Lisinopril and tonight my bp is at 154/89 I am 5 5 , 130lb, female, active ....flight attendant. Should I be worried ? What should I do now? Thank you, Jeannie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Blood pressure 221/109 is hypertensive urgency and warrants further investigation as to what caused a sudden elevation in your blood pressure. It is necessary to determine whether you have essential hypertension or there is an underlying cause. You should get a few investigations done like EKG, serum electrolyte level, blood sugar levels, thyroid profile, and serum urea/ creatinine.

Meanwhile, you should continue with the medicines your physician has prescribed you to keep your blood pressure under control. Since your blood pressure has not yet come down to an acceptable level, I would advise you against flying for some days as it may aggravate your condition. I would suggest you consult your physician before you start flying again.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma.amman
