How Can Elevated Cholesterol Levels Be Treated?

I have high cholesterol. I had a 6 way bypass 6 month s ago. My physician said cut the dose of atorvastatin from 40mgs to 20mgs a day because my last blood work showed an elevated level of something from my liver. I rarely drink alcohol and am not overweight. Its not what I eat but genetically oriented. Is there a better statin I can take? I do drink a lot of water and live a pretty healthy diet -for someone who s wife is a cattle rancher. I don t want to die of organ failure. I am 61.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I can understand your concern, statin can cause liver injury, which is reversible, so your doctor is very right to reduce the dose of statin. However you should not worry, you should check your liver function and cholesterol regularly like every three months, if atorvastatin is still a problem and you cholesterol is high; there are other drugs available that can help lower your cholesterol. So don't worry a lot. Cholesterol is not the only cause for heart problems, if you are not obese, you do regular exercise, good vegetarian diet, you don't smoke, you don't use lot of alcohol, then the chance of organ failure for you is very least.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
