How Can Elevated Uric Acid Levels Be Treated?

I need to lower my uric acid (history of kidney stones). My doctor told me to decrease red meats to only once or twice a week. I am confused as to how many ounces of protein (all protein...eggs, cheese, meats, etc.) I am allowed on a daily basis such as 4-6 oz per meal or 4-6 oz for the total day?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Uric acid levels can be reduced by moderate intake of non-vegetarian food and avoiding consumption of alcohol. Intake of protein does not contribute to increase in uric acid levels. Hence, you may take protein as recommended and to your body needs. Consume good quality of water along with citrus fruit juices containing Vitamin C. There are drugs like Allopurinol which will reduce the uric acid level. However, it can be kept as last resort as controlling by diet seems to be quite effective. Kindly check the uric acid level after two weeks to know the response and consult your doctor accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
