Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Excessive Bleeding From A Cut On The Leg Be Stopped?
my father has a history of heart problems (stents about 5 yrs ago, artery tearing about 3 months ago. He is on blood thinners and has a small cut on his leg that we can t seem to stop the bleeding. It isn t gushing out but thin stream that won t stop. Now, on the same leg his ankle and foot (including big toe) is swollen. I have his feet elevated. Is that all I can do.
I would explain that it is important first of all stopping bleeding and after that investigating for the local swelling. Raising the affected foot is a good idea, another measure would be to properly control high blood pressure values by administering fast-acting drugs.
But, what is more, important would be to locally compress the area of bleeding origin (wound). A strap or belt tightly attached around the limb before the bleeding stream is required as soon as possible to prevent excessive blood loss.
In addition, I recommend asking medical assistance to the nearest ER service at your living area for a careful physical inspection, properly wound disinfection and eliminating the source of further bleeding coupled with required re-hydration.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
