How Can Fever Along With Rashes On The Body Be Treated?

My daughter just called me. Her 15 month old son has had a rash the last couple of days, started running a fever, then appetite was diminished, as well as not drinking as much. She called his doctor and they said there is a virus going around. Just to keep an eye on him and they had no openings. This morning, she took him in and they did a blood test and said that he was anemic. He is a very good eater. They called her back a little while ago and said his white count was very high, and the doctor told her to take him to ER if he didn t improve. She also mentioned to my daughter that she didn t think it was cancer. I asked my daughter if they did a strep culture, also if they did a urine test for a UTI, and she said no. I told her to go back and insist on those, and also to ask if they could tell by a blood panel if this was bacterial or viral? Can you tell me what other things they should be checking? I don t like the fact that they just sent her home with a wait and see approach. She lives in Montana and is on medicaid. I want them to be proactive and check everything. What other tests should they be doing?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Usually in viral infection there's is elevation of lymphocytes and reduced platelet count. In bacterial infection there's is a leukemoid reaction which may lead to elevation of leukocyte count. But how much elevation is your not mentioned. Please consult your pediatrician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
