How Can Gait Ataxia Be Treated?

I have been diagnosed with gait ataxia that has evolved within the last year. I previously had normal muscle in my legs and participated in regular supervised exercise classes for 16 years following a CABG in July 2001. In October, I underwent one week of steroid infusion therapy, followed by 6 weeks of oral prednisone in decreasing doses. To date, I have had little, if any, real improvement in my walking ability. I am now about to undergo a course of IVIg therapy to see if I will show improvement from this treatment course. Any experience with this condition and these treatments? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Gait ataxia treatment depends upon the cause it may be cerebellar or spinal ataxia, it may be due to cerebellar degeneration or infection or alcohol intake or chrug Strauss's syndrome etc..

use support while walking, avoid high risk activities.

please consult your neurophysician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
