Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My Dad has gastroperisis, i believe it has been brought on by prolong use of pain meds as he ahs been in the hospital since November 17. The Gi wants to give him a drug called Reglan. I asked him to stop the antidepressant he is on and the opioids, since these can cause this problem . I see that Erythromysin can be used as well an does not have these crazy sideaffects. His case is sever, but given what we think the cause s, wouldn t it be better to stop the pain meds, now that he is out of pain, the antidepressant and use erythromysin to see if it will kick start that nerve instead of using the Reglan?
You haven't mentioned the ailment for which your Dad is admitted and for what the medicines are being prescribed.
My advice:
If the patient can be mobilized then it will be easy. Being bedridden for a long time can make it worse.
If the patient cannot be mobilized then depending on the condition medicines can be given.
Do not stop the medicines without consulting your treating doctor.
For any further queries you can always come back to HealthcareMagic.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
