How Can Gout Be Treated?

I am currently dealing with a gout attack. I control my gout through diet, no pills. The flare up started about 3 days ago. Normally I can flush my system out within a day and I m good to go again. I normally get 1 flare up a year. This time I can t figure out what is going on, I have been flushing my system with water, about 13 16oz. Bottles through the day and 1 Gatorade. For food I have only had oatmeal made with water and a slice of dry wheat toast. Through the last few days I have had a random fever from the swelling and I have had a slight on and off pain in my kidney s. Yesterday the swelling went down a lot and I thought I was over it but I woke up again today with the swelling and pain back.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Gout is caused by an increase in the serum uric acid levels in the blood. It seems that you are having an acute attack of gout. You mention that you generally control your symptoms without any medications, which are commendable but this time it seems you are not able to get it under control. I would advise you to get your serum uric acid levels checked. Generally high uric acid levels are brought down by a course of Allopurinol, but in acute attacks, it has no role. Colchicine is quite effective in controlling an acute attack. You can discuss it with your physician. Meanwhile, you can take an over the counter painkiller like Indomethacin to alleviate the pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regard,
Dr. Nazma.amman
