my 18 year old daughter has been shedding her hair, it breaks off shorter and shorter by the day. she has never had a perm or colored her hair but she was diagnoised at age 8 with morphea. she also has started to emit an odor of ammonia when she washes her hair. this has been going on for about 1 1/2 years and we have seen her family physician and a dermatologist and they have no answers. she also had kidney surgery once at 2 yrs. old and again at about 6 or 7. she has been fine for years but one day about 1 1/2 yrs. ago she just woke up one morning with a big gap in the back of her hair. she had long straight hair nearly to her bottom and when it feel out it was nearly to her shoulders but only in a place about 1 inch wide. it has yet to regrow. any suggestions? my email is YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Well, effective treatments for some types of hair loss are available. But some hair loss is permanent. If your hair loss is caused by an underlying disease, treatment for that disease will be necessary. This may include drugs to reduce inflammation and suppress your immune system, such as prednisone. But also, 2 medications are used for treatment and include minoxidil and Finasteride. If there is no success with these then hair transplant or restoration surgery can make the most of the hair you have left.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
