How Can Headache And Dried Nose Blood Be Treated Post An Injury?

My son was playing soccer on Thursday and got elbowed in the nose. He has had a headache and nose ache since. We took him to the doctor today, they told us he didn t have a concussion or a broken nose but that he had a ton of dry blood inside the upper nose which is what is causing the headaches. Do you have any advice on how to get the blood out of his nose?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your son getting a elbow hit on nose with dried blood now, has headache, consulted a Doctor who said there is no fracture or concussion , it is the blood clot in nose that is causing the headache, wants to know how to remove such blood.
The easiest way is the instill normal saline in nose so that the clot gets separated from the nasal mucosa and hence the blot can be easily expelled from nose.
ENT Surgeon can help you more if the routine management does not help.
He would suction the nose to remove the clot.
Since there was blood in nose, it is best to go for CT scan of nose and brain to rule out any injury. And if present then will be treated accordingly as required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
