How Can Hearing Loss Be Treated?

Hello Sir, I am suffering with hearing problem since childhood , actually I can understand through lip action only means when a person is before me then I can understand what they r speaking in all remaining cases I am hearing only noise ,my certificate showing 57% disability, but I am not sure how much correct it is and i am seeing in nowadays also some hearing impairment people also talking on phone but I can not this making me feeling sad,, and facing lot of problems in conversation and in communication,I can not talk on phone also I am completely missing voices and finding difficult to hear voices, for this type of cases how Audiometry and BERA test gives accurate results ,how to know where is problem in nerves ,when doctor recently conducted BERA test he was saying your left ear working properly but not right ear, but both ears can understand through lip action when in cases of otherwise both ears can fail in grasping voice, due to this it s very difficult to hear at all,but I think these tests purely based on sounds ,if sound is coming what is the use if we are not grasping voices . ... And I am using hearing aids since childhood but problem is same since then..no improvement ..I am seeking for your reply....please tell where is problem ...and suggest some good ENT hospital in Mysore or Bangalore for conducting again BERA tests,.,......... Thanks in advance..

Hi,

What kind of hearing aid are you using now? You're right hearing impaired people can talk on phone too with proper hearing aid. Hearing tests can range from normal tuning fork to BERA (Brain stem evoked response audiometry).

I will explain to you how we locate the pathology of hearing loss in a typical BERA there will be what called as waveforms will come there are 7 waveforms each waveform corresponds to different locations for e.g. Wave 1 corresponds to the distal part of cranial nerve 8 and wave 7 corresponds to inferior colliculus a part of brain in the auditory pathway. Based on that the treatment varies.

So what I would suggest you is:
1) Take BERA again sometimes it takes more than one to diagnose.
2) Hearing aids are not magical devices and at times patients need auditory therapy to get back some amount of hearing for that specialists are there in many multi-speciality hospitals who will help you with it.
3) There are recent imported binaural devices which eliminate the background noise and enhances the speech you can consult an ENT he will help you with it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
