How Can Heart Palpitations Causing Chest Pains Be Treated?

Can you give me a probable diagnosis for my syptoms? I am a normal weight 19 yr old female, My heart starts beat fast in an "uncomfortable" situation and in worse case senario it progresses to pound to the point it hurts..like a sharp stinging sensation in the middle of my chest. I then start thinking Im having a heart attack and I might pass out while driving and wreck and die which makes me freak out and hyperventilate and of course my heart beats even faster and hurts worse. This has happened before.. but it's getting worse and happening more often lately and the slightest incidents can trigger one of these episodes. I don't even like to go out in public anymore. I don't want to go to the docter to find there is nothing they can do so can you tell if this is treatable or give me any other information?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms could be related to possible cardiac arrhythmia. Anxiety can not be excluded either. For this reason, I would recommend performing some tests: - a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound- a chest X-ray study- complete blood count for anemia- thyroid hormone levels for possible thyroid gland dysfunction. An ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring (Holter) would help exclude possible cardiac arrhythmia. If all the above tests result normal, you should consider anxiety as the main cause of your complaints.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
