How Can Heavy Bleeding With Long Periods Be Treated?

I am 48 yrs old. Last March my periods were so heavy I lost so much blood I lost 5 lbs in one week. the dr put me on the pill only to hold me over until my son got married in June so I would not have problems. I stayed on the pill until Nov when I told me dr i was taking myself off due to major weigh gain. All was good until this past March I got another period very light. Now I got it again and it has been 17 days now and still going strong. I haven't had time to call a dr. Advice?
