How Can Hematochezia Be Treated?

Hello..So, I started to notice a little amount of blood in my stool a few months back. It stopped so I left it alone, but recently in the last 2 days I barely pushed and the whole bowl turned red..I m wondering what type of doctor to go to. And I ve lost weight in the last year or so..but not too much. Also, I don t have to have a bm everyday. Some times it takes 3 or 4 days till I have to go, but I eat ALL the time. I just don t get it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You can go to your GP first, he or she would be able to examine you, initiate the appropriate tests and refer you to a gastroenterologist for further assessment.

Blood in the stool can be due to different causes such as: (1) infection
(2) trauma to the anus
(3)cancer
(4)benign (non cancerous) growths
(5)diverticular disease- the presence of out pockets or out pouches in the colon
(6)hemorrhoids

The treatment would depend on the cause found.

I hope this helps
