How Can Hiatal Hernia Be Treated?

I have an hiatal hernia 3 cms for two years. Heartburn and now minor asthma. Very active . play hockey at relatively high level . Heartburn hinders skating. Runner but haven t run for two years. Can t do yoga or high intensity training. Had Stretta four months ago. Didn t work. Thinking of surgery. How long before I can play hockey and weight lift. I think the surgery will work. Will the wrap hold up?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, yes surgical intervention seems most appropriate.
Usually it may take three months for routine exertion activities to presume after successful repair but may take upto 6 months for heavy weight training, if any required for the said sports. Still constraints of heavy weight lift may presume up to a limit and should be under guidance by a physio training and surgeons advice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
