How Can Hyperpigmentation Around The Ankles Be Treated?

my son broke both bones in lower leg about half way between the knee and ankle in a motorcycle accident last May. At the time a rod was inserted in larger bone along with pins at top and bottom. the skin is very severely bruised looking by the ankle yet. His doctor said in the process of doing the pin/rod surgery that it was tissue damage at the ankle area. Is this normal and if anything what can we do to lighten the color of the skin? Any home remedies? Advice?
