How Can Hyperpigmentation Around The Mouth Be Treated?

I am a Special Education Teacher and I have an 11 year old girl in my room with a dark ring around her mouth. SHE Is African American AND THIS Is An ECONOMICALLY DEPRESSED Area and I know that they can't afford Dr.'s care. Is there anything I can get for her or do you think I should tell guardian to take her to a clinic?

Hello,

Perioral hyperpigmentation can be due to a number of causes like Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, sun spots, age spots etcetera.

So, my suggestion is to start scrubbing the face and the dark areas with a mild face scrub.

You should apply creams containing some of these ingredients like:Vitamin C, kojic acid , arbutin , azelaic acid (found in wheat, barley, and rye), licorice extract, niacinamide, or grapeseed extract.

You can apply Hydroquinone containing cream. You can also apply lemon juice and sugar scrub and apply for 2 to 3 minutes. Always apply sunscreen lotion when going out.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
