How Can Hyperthyroidism And Elevated Heart Rate Be Treated?

My daughter has hyperthyroidism. She has been waiting for a consult with an endocrinologist scheduled in April since January. In the meantime, her doctor put her on Atenelol to prevent her heart from racing too high. However, my daughter tells me that when she exercised moderately on a stair master or similar machine, her heart rate gets up to 200! This does not sound right to me. What should she do?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Usually, after exercise, the heart rate is may reach up to 180-200 depending on the severity of exercise.

But in hyperthyroidism, there is a chance to get arrhythmia so please check your doctor that she is not getting arrhythmia. Need to start antiarrhythmic drugs also.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
