How Can Infected Dead Skin On The Feet Be Treated?
My Mother, 96 years old, has dead skin on the heal of her foot that is infected. The doctor and nurse at the nursing home say it is due to circulation problems. She had a stroke and doesn t move her feet at all. She is also diabetic. She has been given antibiotics. The dead skin is starting to smell and get soft. They can surgically remove the skin but say it will be very painful. Should it be removed? What will happen if it isn t removed?
Infected dead skin is common among diabetics that can barely move as in case of your mother.
As it got soft and smelly, it's time for surgical treatment. Yes, I think you should get it removed. They will take care that your mother won't feel any pain during the surgical procedure.
If you let it unremoved, unfortunately, the infection can affect her bones and that would be worse.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
