How Can Infected Ear Piercing Be Treated?

My 16-year-old son got his ear pierced five months ago. In the last two weeks, he was waking up with blood or pus crusted around his earring. He has since taken out the earring and the pus, blood, and crust are no longer present. However, he (and I can) now feel a bump within his earlobe, approximately 3-5mm in diameter. What should we do next?
