How Can Irregular Periods Be Treated?

Hi ..my daughter is 19 years old and she has irregular periods..she always miss her period for 2/3 months but this time she missed it for 5 months.. she did all blood tests also she did ultra sound all turned to be well .. doctor gave her today duphaston 2 pills daily for 10 days .. should i give her or i should wait till her period shows naturally??!!!

Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns.

Duphaston contains progesterone hormone. As your daughter did not have a period for 5 months, if she takes the duphaston, it will increase progesterone levels in her body and when she stops the pills after 10 days, the progesterone levels will fall in 3-4 days after stopping. Once the progesterone levels fall she will see a bleed. This can be considered a period.

You have a choice. You can either take the Duphaston pills and see a period within the next 2 weeks or wait for her normal period to occur, but we can’t tell when it will occur.

If you want her to have regular periods, she could go on a few months course of the combined hormonal pill (like Microgynon or Femilon etc.). This decision needs to be taken by her gynaecologist.
